The Best Decisions I Never Influenced

The Best Decisions I Never Influenced

The Best Decisions I Never Influenced

On trust, clarity, and the role of a trusted advisor.

People often assume that success in real estate comes from persuasion.

The ability to negotiate. To convince. To close.

Over time, I have come to see things differently.

Some of the best decisions I have witnessed were never influenced by me at all.

My role has never been to decide whether a client should buy a property. Nor has it been to convince them that a particular house is the right one. My responsibility is to provide information, context, perspective, and clarity. The decision itself belongs entirely to them.

This distinction may appear subtle, but it changes everything.

Throughout a transaction, clients often ask:

"What would you do?"

It is a natural question. A significant purchase carries uncertainty, and people seek reassurance when facing an important decision.

Yet my answer rarely begins with what I would do.

My life is not theirs.

My priorities are not theirs.

My definition of the right home may have little to do with what matters most to them.

Instead, I try to understand what they value, what they hope to create, and what role a property will play in their lives. The goal is not to provide answers. It is to help reveal them.

Some decisions become clearer through data.

Others become clearer through conversation.

Many become clearer through time.

I have seen clients walk away from properties that appeared perfect on paper. Months later, they found something that suited them far better.

I have also witnessed buyers recognize their future home almost immediately. Not because the property checked every box, but because it aligned with something deeper and more important than a list of criteria.

In both cases, the outcome emerged from clarity rather than influence.

Trusting the process requires patience. It means accepting that uncertainty is part of every meaningful decision. It means allowing space for reflection, questions, and sometimes even hesitation.

As advisors, we often feel pressure to move things forward. To create momentum. To produce an outcome.

The longer I practice, the more I appreciate restraint.

Sometimes the most valuable contribution is not a recommendation.

It is a question.

A question that brings priorities into focus.

A question that uncovers what truly matters.

A question that helps someone recognize an answer they already knew.

Looking back, many of the transactions I am proudest of share a common characteristic. They were not driven by pressure or persuasion. They were guided by understanding.

The best decisions I have witnessed were not the ones I influenced.

They were the ones my clients made with confidence, clarity, and a genuine sense of alignment.

And I simply had the privilege of being part of the process.
